Bragg Peak in Ionizing Radiation

Understanding the Bragg Curve

The Bragg curve is a graphical representation of the energy loss of ionizing radiation as it travels through matter. For heavy charged particles, this curve exhibits a distinct peak known as the Bragg peak.

Origin of the Bragg Peak

The Bragg peak arises when incident X-ray radiation undergoes constructive interference after reflecting off various planes in the matter. Monoenergetic particles, such as protons, helium ions, and high-energy heavy ions, also exhibit Bragg peaks at the end of their range.

Significance in Proton Beam Therapy

In proton beam therapy, the term "Bragg peak" specifically refers to the on-axis depth-dose distribution in water of a broad quasi-monoenergetic proton beam. This peak corresponds to the narrow depth dimension where the proton beam deposits its maximum energy, making it ideal for targeted radiation therapy applications.
